January 23, 2025

Cape girls’ basketball had three players hit for a double-double in a 72-42 victory over Caesar Rodney Jan. 21, to move the Vikings to 7-4 on the season. The Riders are 4-6.

The Vikings started out slow, finishing the first quarter tied with the Riders at 16-16. That’s where the similarity ended, as the Vikings pulled away with 17 points in the second stanza to take a nine-point lead into the halftime break. The girls tripled the CR output of the third quarter, 24-8, and followed with a 15-11 advantage in the fourth to garner the 30-point win.

Junior Amalia Fruchtman scored 25 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and a block.

“We came out slow, but we picked up the intensity,” said Fruchtman. “We knew what we wanted to do today, so it was just a matter of when we decided to do it. Our main focus was to get it in the paint. The big girls handled business down there. I felt good about our play. Getting the two fouls early sort of got in my head for a minute, but I shook it off and bounced back.”

Senior Havyn Greene put up 20 points, 10 rebounds and a couple of steals.

“I think we started off a little tired,” said Greene. “We usually have a slow start, and then we regroup and come together as a team and we bring lots of energy, and it goes in our favor. We had a lot of great looks tonight.”

Senior Hayden Hudson tallied 12 rebounds and 11 points. She now has 120 rebounds on the season.

Senior guard Faith Re dished off a season-high nine assist, giving her 42 on the season. She also grabbed six rebounds and made two steals.

Jurnee White, Maya Yngve and Sydney Whetzel teamed for 14 points, three rebounds and seven assists.

“We weren’t aggressive at the beginning of the game,” said head coach Pat Woods. “It’s the same story. Everything doesn’t have to be a beautiful, well-executed play with six touches and a jumper. Once we tried to attacked a little more, I think we were better. We were killing it in the paint. Defensively, we needed to wake up. It was just aggression all over the place. Once we play more aggressive, we are better.”

The Vikings JV squad moved to 8-0 with a 33-17 victory over the Riders.

Jordynn Bowe led the Vikings with 12 points. Laura Karen Lima and Mia Scott added eight, while Kallea Eleazar scored five.
