Cape girls’ lax opens at Stephen Decatur March 22

Vikings host power play day
March 21, 2022

Cape girls’ lacrosse closed out the preseason March 19, hosting a four-team play day, welcoming power programs Moorestown, Glenelg and Garrison Forest.

Those teams are no joke and travel by coach bus, no big yellow taxis.

The Vikings played three 50-minute games over three-and-a-half hours, beginning with Moorestown of New Jersey at 9 a.m.

“Moorestown was a great scrimmage for us,” said coach Lindsey Underwood. “It was the first time we had all our plays in; the girls worked really hard this past week to put it all together.”

There were no tabulated scores displayed on the running-clock scoreboard, but the back-and-forth seemed to be about even.

“There are scrimmage games,” Underwood said. “But I felt our team was starting to come together.”

Moorestown is a Group III Jersey school that has won 21 state championships, which included a streak of 228 wins against New Jersey opponents.

Cape scrimmaged Glenelg in the second game, and the good feeling coming after Moorestown quickly evaporated. Glenelg is a public school from Howard County, Md. The Gladiators have won five state championships in girls’ lacrosse since 2005, the latest in 2018.

“Glenelg was a tough team,” Underwood said. “Their goalie [a Virginia Tech commit] was really skilled and was super athletic. They got after us pretty good.”

Cape played Garrison Forest in the final scrimmage. The Grizzly Bears are a private school in Owing Mills, Md. Garrison Forest is a girls’ school that competes in the newly formed IAAM. The school has an equestrian and polo team, and their lacrosse team is top shelf.

“We were able to regroup against Garrison and came out hard,” Underwood said. “I was really happy to see the girls make the adjustments we talked about quickly and on the fly.”

Cape opens the season against a pair of tough Maryland teams, playing at Stephen Decatur Tuesday, March 22, then hosting Queen Anne’s Friday, March 25.

Cape is captained by Ella Rishko and Kelly Bragg.
