The Cape girls’ lacrosse team played Marriotts Ridge April 12 at Queen Anne’s County High School. It was like a midseason play day. The clock ran the entire game. There would be no overtime; there was no sense of urgency.
The game before Cape resulted in a 9-9 tie, as Queen Anne’s came back to tie South River in the final seconds.
Cape versus Marriotts Ridge would follow with the exact same result, a 9-9 draw. Back-to-back regular-season ties in lacrosse was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for spectators.
Cape trailed the entire game, entering the final period down 8-5 and later 9-6. There is no shot clock in high school lacrosse, and on this day, the clock ran after goals and after flags.
“The team fought hard. I was proud of how hard they worked to come back,” said Cape coach Lindsey Underwood. “We were really locked-in in the fourth quarter. You can’t start slow against good teams. We showed a lot of heart and fight coming back in the game.”
Cape was led in scoring by Haley Gamuciello with three goals. Claire Lopez, Macy Steinwedel and Ally Diehl each had two. Abigail Schaeffer was credited with four saves.
Lopez also had four assists, earning the junior 100 career assists.
Notes - Cape played a 5-5 game in 2009 at home versus Sts. Peter and Paul. The game was called due to thunderstorms and called complete and not rescheduled. Cape went on to win its first of 14 state championships that season. Avary “The Biz” Miller had a noteworthy game versus Marriotts Ridge, taking the draw while being a two-way middie. “Avary was all over the field,” Underwood said. “Her energy was contagious and got us back in the game.” Cape beat Kent Island April 11 by a score of 12-6 behind goals from Macy Steinwedel with four; Mairead Rishko, Makenzie Todd and Haley Gamuciello with two each; and single goals from Claire Lopez and Ally Diehl. Assists were Lopez with five, and Steinwedel and Lina Frederick with one apiece. Abbey Schaeffer had five saves.
