The Cape girls’ lacrosse program owns 13 straight state titles with an in-state winning streak that reached 170 April 26, as the Vikings defeated Caesar Rodney 17-6.
The Riders are coached by former Cape goalie Gina Voss. They entered the game with a 9-1 record.
Cape led Caesar Rodney 12-3 at halftime, then ran the clock to the 17-6 final score.
Cape’s 17 goals were all scored by underclassmen, including Lulu Rishko with five, Lexi Nowakowski with four, Macy Steinwedel and Carrie Clausius with three each, and Claire Lopez and Lina Frederick with one goal apiece.
Caesar Rodney goals were scored by Ellie Roberts with two, and Elise Hensley, Rylie Faircloth, Ella Brown and Ella Price each scoring one.
Cape’s Anna Lopez had six saves, while the Riders’ Melissa Dolt was credited with 16 stops.
Cape will cross the Delaware Bay Saturday, April 29, to face Ocean City High School of New Jersey. Cape beat Ocean City last season 16-8, but 14 of those goals were scored by now-graduated seniors.
Notes: There are currently 17 girls’ lacrosse teams in Delaware with winning records out of a total of 36 teams. Those teams with a .700 winning percentage or better include Archmere at 9-0, Charter School of Wilmington at 8-1, Cape at 7-1, Tatnall at 7-1, Ursuline at 6-1, Caesar Rodney at 9-2, Concord at 7-2, Milford at 7-2, Smyrna at 7-2, Sanford at 7-3 and Sussex Academy at 7-3.
