Cape girls' basketball overcomes slow start to defeat Ravens

February 1, 2024

A very good Sussex Tech team took advantage of a sleepwalking Cape girls’ basketball team early in their Jan. 30 matchup. But the Vikings woke up in the third quarter to down the Ravens 57-40 in front of a large crowd in Cape’s Big House. The victory moves the Vikings to 7-5 on the season.

The Ravens took a two-point 22-20 lead into the halftime break. When the teams returned to the court, the Vikings ran off a 36-18 second half to garner the 17-point Northern Division victory.

“We had a little bit of a short warmup, let’s just say that,” said junior guard Faith Re. “It’s always exciting to play Tech. We had a rough start. We were a little shaken when Amalia [Fruchtman] got in foul trouble right off the start. It took us a while, but we were able to come back strong.”

”It was tense at first,” said freshman Ally Diehl. “Every game counts. Every win counts.”

Fruchtman and Re each scored 19 points and teamed for seven rebounds. Re dished off five assists. Diehl and Kayden Borge Williams played big coming off the bench, scoring seven and three points, respectively. Each had three rebounds and three assists, and teamed for five steals.

Junior Hayden Hudson continues to add to her rebound stats, snagging nine and blocking five shots. Freshman Mairead Rishko, in her first start, scored three, grabbed two rebounds and garnered three assists.

“Amalia picking up three fouls in two minutes was tough,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “Her not being in was an adjustment. Havyn [Greene] came in a did a great job. Her mid-range jumper is fantastic. We’d like to get the ball into her more in the post. Havyn and Hayden bear a lot of the burden for us. Mairead played well in her first start. She wants the ball and runs to it to bring it up and control it.”

The Cape JV squad moved to 8-0 with a 59-5 running-clock victory over the JV Ravens. Harper Mamele and Amara Fruchtman scored 13 points each, while Sydney Whetzel and Maya Yngve tallied 12 and 11, respectively. Jurnee White, Mamele and Fruchtman  grabbed seven, six and four rebounds in the contest.
