Cape grads earn $2.8 million in scholarships
Cape's graduating class of 2017 earned $2.8 million in college scholarships. Several students earned full-tuition scholarships for all four years at their chosen schools. Over 110 students earned individual scholarships from higher learning institutions and many local groups.
David Collord earned an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy that translates to $180,000 in scholarship money over the course of his education. Collord went through a rigorous application process in order to achieve this top honor. He also received the Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary JROTC Cadet Scholarship. During his time at Cape, Collord was a leader in the JROTC program and participated in the National Honor Society.
Brendan Kane earned an appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy equaling $250,000. Kane also went through a lengthy process that included securing a nomination to the academy from Sen. Thomas Carper. Kane was a member of the varsity lacrosse team and a member of National Honor Society.
Swarthmore College awarded Cape senior Erik-Stephane Stancofski a McCabe Scholarship which pays the full $202,000 tuition over the course of his college career. Stancofski was the class valedictorian and has an outstanding record of leadership during his tenure at Cape. Stancofski also was on the varsity lacrosse team. In addition to the McCabe Scholarship, he won the Michael C. Ferguson Achievement Award, and was a WGMD Athlete of the Year nominee. Stancofski said, "The biggest thing I am taking away from high school is the friendships that I have made. I will carry these relationships on forever."
Juan Marquez was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to the University of Michigan that amounts to $209,0000. Marquez was co-drum major and participated multiple times in an award-winning Odyssey of the Mind team which placed eighth in this year's world competition. He also has acted in countless theater productions and earned many art awards during his time at Cape. Marquez also won the Howard Schroeder Memorial Art Scholarship, the Michael C. Ferguson Achievement Award and the Rehoboth Beach Bears Gay-Straight Alliance Scholarship.
Hannah Lowe earned a 1693 Scholars Program Award totaling $135,000 from the College of William & Mary. Lowe has a long list of accomplishments including spending 13 years in Girl Scouts, involvement in school clubs and theater productions, and volunteering at the Lewes library. Lowe was also on a team that went to the Odyssey of the Mind world competition several years in a row. Lowe received the Christopher J. Smail Memorial Scholarship, the Sue Lore Social Studies Book Grant, the U.S. Air Force Female Mathematics and Science Award, and the Zwaanendael Club of Lewes Scholarship.
Connor Thompson will be attending Boston College on a full-tuition scholarship totaling $202,400. He was a member of the varsity baseball team and a member of National Honor Society. Thompson also received the Jostens Award for Loyalty, Honor and Trust; the President's Award for Educational Excellence; and the Village Improvement Association Good Citizenship Award.
