Cape graduates help Delaware win national championship in club field hockey

The national championship of collegiate club field hockey belongs to the University of Delaware. The Blue Hens won the 16-team National Collegiate Field Hockey League Tournament played over two days, Nov. 5 and 6, at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex and United States Field Hockey Training Center, beating the University of Virginia 3-2 in overtime on a penalty stroke.

Leigh Ann Redefer, Kara Voss and Veronica D'Amico, former Cape athletes, were prime time players on the Delaware team.

Delaware won three games Nov. 5, beating Old Dominion 4-3, Penn State 3-0 and the University of Maryland 4-0.

Championship Sunday saw Delaware beat the University of Connecticut 2-1 in overtime then defeated Duke 4-0 in the semifinal game to reach the championship.

The University of Delaware had never won a club national championship in field hockey prior to the win over Virginia.
