Cape Henlopen Elks raise $5K for Cancer Support Delaware
Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 of Lewes recently announced it remains the top sponsor of the Wings of Hope fundraiser for Cancer Support Community Delaware.
For this year’s event held June 25 in Milton Memorial Park, the lodge surpassed its goal by gathering donations of $2,800 on 160 butterflies, a new record. Officers voted to round that amount up and present the organization with a check for $5,000. Last year, the lodge rounded up its 138 butterfly donations to $3,000.
The emotional yet uplifting ceremony culminates in the release of 250 live painted lady butterflies to symbolize the special lives lost to cancer.
Once the $750 registration fee was paid, a sheer white curtain was given to Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge as an official sponsor. Thereafter, members could donate any amount for a colorful paper butterfly on which to write the names of those they hold dear, whether a friend, family member or even themselves who were affected by cancer. Each personalized butterfly was hung on the curtain and displayed in the lodge to encourage others to join the fundraising efforts.
