Cape Henlopen Senior Center adds new classes
This fall, the Cape Henlopen Senior Center in Rehoboth Beach will introduce several innovative programs and classes. Anyone seeking to learn a new skill, stay active or simply socialize with fellow seniors will find something of interest.
A woodcarving instruction class can help beginner or seasoned woodworkers by providing them with the knowledge and tools needed to create beautiful wooden masterpieces. Experienced instructors will guide participants through the process, helping them develop different skills. Also a great choice for those who enjoy hands-on hobbies is the Model Building Club, where attendees can highlight their talent and creativity while working on projects individually or collaborating with others.
A Chronic Pain Program led by knowledgeable staff will provide individuals with tips and techniques to manage their pain effectively so they can live a more comfortable and fulfilling life. In another new fall program, Eating Smart and Moving, attendees can learn how to make healthy food choices and incorporate physical activity into their daily routine.
For those who may wonder what is considered normal aging and what might be cause for concern, a new class will provide valuable information and insights. Understanding the aging process can help seniors better prepare for the future and make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Likewise, anyone interested in learning more about managing their Medicaid and Medicare benefits can do so at CHSC. This class is a great way to stay informed and empowered when it comes to healthcare options.
Lots of seniors enjoy friendly competition, so the center is introducing Wii Bowling and Pencil Art classes. These fun and engaging activities will challenge their skills and creativity while allowing them to connect with others in a supportive and encouraging environment. To kick up the activity level in a different way, square dancing classes provide not only great exercise but also a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and socialize.
In addition to these new programs, Cape Henlopen Senior Center continues to offer a wide variety of exercise classes such as arthritis exercise, ballroom dancing, sit and get fit, line dancing, Jazzercise, LaBlast, chair yoga, gentle yoga, tai chi and chair tai chi. There are plenty of options to help seniors stay active, improve flexibility, and have fun in a supportive and welcoming environment.
An exercise class showcase will begin at 9 a.m., Friday, Sept. 20, at the center, with each instructor presenting a 20-minute demonstration; early registration is encouraged at 302-227-2055. Any instructors interested in teaching a class not already listed may contact Bernita Hackney, program director, at that number.
Other activities available at CHSC include sewing, art painting, playing billiards and participating in group games. The center’s chorus group is always seeking new members to join in singing at nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other senior centers. The center is currently in need of a substitute piano player, so anyone who is musically inclined and interested in participating with the group may call the center for more information.
CHSC also offers a varied schedule of day and overnight trips. Participants can explore new destinations, make memories, and enjoy the company of fellow seniors while traveling to exciting and interesting places. Options include everything from luncheon outings and full-day trips to extended vacations lasting a week or two. Trip Coordinator Kathy Gurski is the person to contact for information and assistance.
The center’s popular Cash Bingo fundraiser is set for Wednesday, Sept. 4, with doors opening at 11:30 a.m. and games starting at 1 p.m. The public is welcome, and all attendees can have fun, enjoy good food, and support the senior center at the same time.
