Cape High’s future educators stand out at state conference
The Cape Henlopen School District announced 30 students successfully competed at the recent Delaware Educators Rising state conference, demonstrating their passion, skills and commitment to the field of education. The competition challenges students in areas such as lesson planning, public speaking, job interviews and instructional strategies.
Cape brought home multiple awards, with 13 entries scoring gold to qualify for the June national conference in Orlando, Fla.
"We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and dedication," said Linda Marvel, a teacher at Cape High. "Their success at the state level is a testament to their talent and commitment to shaping the future of education. I look forward to seeing all that they accomplish at the national competition."
Teams and individuals scoring gold awards to qualify for nationals are Children's Literature K-3 Varsity, Mallory Terhune and Allaire Burton; Ethical Dilemma Team Varsity, Daniel Bila, Lily Phile, Jack Thomson and Brielle Ross; Inside Our Schools Team Varsity, Shannon Hitchens, Madison Elphick, Kaitlyn Morris and Ava Lynn Webb; Lesson Planning and Delivery Arts Varsity, Alyssa Millman, music; and Interactive Bulletin Board Intermediate Junior Varsity Dual, Bridget Connelly and Mycaela Riberio.
Silver award winners are Exploring Non-Core Teaching Careers Varsity, Noah Lewis; and Inside Our Schools Team Junior Varsity, Macy Davis, Colleen Holohan and Madison Deas.
Bronze award winners are Children's Literature K-3 Spanish Junior Varsity, Darling Matias Lopez; Creative Lecture TED Talk, Lelia Hughes; Exploring Admin Careers Varsity, Regan Best; and Lesson Planning and Delivery STEM Varsity, Ava Webb.
Also receiving certificates for participating are Children's Literature K-3 Varsity, Laiya Ward; Children's Literature K-3 Spanish Junior Varsity, Dulce Corea-Ortega; Children's Literature Pre-K Varsity, Olivia Brittingham and Alexis Olanowski; Exploring Non-Core Teaching Careers Junior Varsity, Austin Hastings; and Public Service Announcement Team Varsity, Rylie Cathcart, Sydney Whetzel, Kaylee Sockriter and Dilyla Rohls.
In addition to the competition, students had the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions with other attendees, hear inspirational keynote speeches, attend interactive workshops and engage in panel discussions.
“The conference doesn’t just provide a great opportunity to students to test their skills and knowledge against other students in the state,” said Marvel. “It is also a chance for students to interact with others who have similar interests, network with professionals in the field to learn from their experiences, and even to collect ideas for their own future classrooms. Overall, it’s a wonderful opportunity for our K12 Teacher Academy Pathway students.”
