Cape High Class of 2021 to graduate together June 8

New distancing limits, size of stadium allow change from two events to one
May 19, 2021

The Cape Henlopen High School Class of 2021 will graduate together, in one live ceremony, at Legends Stadium Tuesday, June 8.

In April, school officials had announced two outdoor events would take place, splitting the graduating class into two ceremonies to maximize the allowed number of guests while following social distancing protocols.

On May 12, Gov. John Carney moved social distancing requirements from 6 feet to 3 feet, and on May 14, Cape High officials informed seniors they would graduate as a class.

“When our plan was originally submitted with the two ceremonies, it was based on current restrictions,” Cape High Principal Nikki Miller said. “All along we were hopeful that if we were able to make the change to one ceremony, we would be able to do so.”

By limiting the number of guest tickets to five per senior, combined with the size of Legends Stadium, Cape High officials were able to maintain distancing between households and combine ceremonies, Miller said.

Tickets will be collected at the stadium entrance. Only ticket holders and graduating students will be allowed in the stadium and on school property; lining up and standing around the stadium will not be permitted. All guests and graduates must wear masks at all times.

Guests must enter the campus via Kings Highway and must display their ticket or graduation gown upon arrival. Individual and family groups will sit in the stands on seats marked with single and multiple X’s, respectively.

Both events will be livestreamed via district social media accounts.

Rain date is 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 9, at Legends Stadium.
