Cape high school field hockey camp braves the heat

The Cape Henlopen High School field hockey camp rolled through hot weather over four days, July 24-27, at Champions Stadium. 

Canopies rimmed the field and there were lots of water breaks. 

The day began July 25 with Hiba Stancofski leading the girls through 20 minutes of yoga in the shadow of the high school. 

Morning activities included skills drills and team competitions organized by Camp Director Tracy Greisbaum, former head coach at the University of Iowa.

After an hourlong break at noon, there were live scrimmages with officials, running cross-field and played simultaneously.  

Counselors/coaches for the high school camp included Kate Austin, Debbie Windett, Brittney Stewart, Sam Connors, Riley Klopp, Darby Klopp, Noelle Sabbagh, Marcella Sabbagh and Emma Duffield.

“There are lots of incoming freshmen at camp mixed with upperclassmen," said Windett, an assistant coach at Cape. “There is lots of field hockey talent in camp this year.”

 

 The camp award winners were: Most Competitive : Layla Conn and Avary Miller. Best Attitude: Isabella Mekulski and Lina Frederick. Leadership: Sam Swift and Aubrie Myers. Evolution (Most Improved: Maddie Long and Angie McCarthy.  Total Game (MVP) Devon Degregory and Atia Sabbagh

There will be an elementary and middle school camp held from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday, July 31 through Thursday, Aug. 3.  

Actual practice for fall high school sports begins Monday, Aug. 14.
