The Cape field hockey team held back Lake Forest Sept. 10, on the Spartans’ Bermuda pitch to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Vikings had a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal, with a 14-1 advantage on corners.
The M & M connection struck at the 10:21 mark of the first period when Mairead Rishko found Macy Steinwedel close to the cage and the senior knocked it home for her sixth goal of the season.
Flocks of geese honked over the hockey field interspersed with crop duster flyovers.
“Lake played two forwards and five midfielders, so there wasn’t much room in the middle of the field,” said coach Kate Austin. “And Lake is athletic. They are a very good hockey team that was 11-5 last season.”
Cape got off the precarious ledge of a 1-0 advantage at 12:18 of the third quarter when Emily Wells crossed the ball through legs and sticks onto the blade of Norah Block who one-timed it past freshman goalie Jessica Lewis for the 2-0 advantage that would be the final score.
Cape goalie Isabella Mekulski was credited with four saves. Lewis of Lake had seven saves.
Cape is scheduled to play at Smyrna Thursday, Sept. 12.
Sussex Academy upsets Smyrna
First-year head coach Caitlyn Hardy led Sussex Academy to a 3-1 upset win at Smyrna. The Seahawks outshot Smyrna 16-6 with two goals from Shelby Manlove and another by Meredith Schiff.
Ryann Durnall scored for Smyrna, the only goal of the first half.
Kacie Rawlings had six saves for the Seahawks, while Nora O”Connell had 16 saves for Smyrna.
“I think we’re on the map of good Delaware field hockey teams,” Hardy said. “It’s going to be a fun season.”
Division II is loaded with good teams, starting with Delmar and Newark Charter and also including Sussex Academy, Caravel, Tower Hill and Indian River.
Milford beat Appoquinimink 7-0 followed by an 11-0 win over Laurel. The Bucs are a diversified offensive highlight reel.
