Cape hockey is condensed intensity during the first two weeks of the preseason, with a pair of weekend play days that last most of the day and punctuate the weekend.
On Thursday, it was a team-bonding water event at Legends Stadium after a morning practice. Players were divided into eight teams that competed in sack and three-legged races, an obstacle course race and tug of war. The inflatable water slides produced insane competitions.
On Friday, it was a play day with eight invited teams: Cape, Delmar, Lake Forest, Polytech, St. Andrew’s, Tower Hill, Broadneck and Caravel Academy.
“We just have a lot of work to do defensively after Saturday,” said coach Kate Austin. “We have a few injuries and illnesses, but we should be all healthy soon.”
The Broadneck Bruins came out fast, while Cape was flat early in the first scrimmage of the day. The Bruins scored in the first minute, then scored later on a penalty stroke. Cape responded with several corners and one goal scored in the 30-minute scrimmage.
“We didn’t play Delmar, Sussex Academy and Lake Forest, but all those teams looked strong,” Austin said.
Cape has another two weeks of practice before the home opener at 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 8, versus Queen Anne’s followed by a game against Pocomoke at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 9.
