Cape Henlopen School District alumni and community members may now bid on and purchase a new Delaware license plate with initials CH followed by one to four digits. Proceeds from sales will benefit the nonprofit Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation, which partners with the school district to support educational enrichment programs.
Plates that contain the digits of graduation years are expected to be especially popular - CH 1969 (the first year of the consolidated district) through CH 2016 (the most recent graduation year) will auctioned to the highest bidders starting Friday, Oct. 14. In addition, CH 1 through CH 5 will also be auctioned to the highest bidders. The auction will end following the Cape High Homecoming game Friday, Oct. 28, and winners will be announced at the Crooked Hammock following the game. For more information, go to www.chef-cape.org. The online auction will be live at 9 a.m., Friday, Oct. 14, and continue through 9:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28.
Plates 101 through 9999 will be sold for $50 with some exceptions. Plates 11 through 99 and 2017 through 2099 will be sold at a later date in order to generate revenue for CHEF for future years. The plate includes an illustration of Cape Henlopen Lighthouse.
"We are delighted to work with the state of Delaware to offer Cape Henlopen School District alumni and community supporters a license to advertise that they are Cape proud,” said CHEF Development Director Alyssa Titus. "All funds raised will support Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation's Cape Schools Excel Funds, which include funding for teaching excellence, STEM, arts education and training, character and career development, and programs to help limited-income students achieve their full potential."
CHEF will administer the license plate program, including the ordering of plates for bidders, communications with DelDOT, collection of revenues and record keeping. All costs to license plate purchasers beyond $10 are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law, since CHEF is a 501c3 nonprofit.
CHEF is beginning its 10th anniversary year, having begun operations in 2006. Since that time, CHEF has allocated over $175,000 to programs which inspire learning and help students achieve their academic and career goals.
