Cape Major All-Stars down Nanticoke/Laurel 8-5

Squad plays Millsboro Thursday night

Cape moved into the third round of the District 3 major all-star softball tournament with a hard-fought 8-5 victory June 30 over Nanticoke/Laurel All-Stars at the Lower Sussex Little League Complex. They play Millsboro Thursday, July 1, at Lower Sussex.

Cape scored three runs in the second inning. Nanticoke/Laurel came back to score five runs in the third. After that it was all Cape, as they scored two each in the fourth and fifth innings, and added an insurance run in the sixth.

Olivia Brittingham and Grayce Glover led Cape, each driving in two RBIs. Izzy Fitzgerald, Mallory Kauffman and Maile Godwin each drove in an RBI. Glover and Godwin each slammed a double.

Brittingham went six innings in the circle, striking out eight batters, scattering eight hits. Kauffman, the catcher, made two big-time throws to get a base runner out at second attempting to steal.

Mears and Kauffman stole three bases, while Brittingham and Alivia Longo had two and Godwin had one stolen base.

Kylah Miller had two RBIs for the Nanticoke/Laurel squad. Brianna Dorey and Rogue Garcia teamed in the circle, striking out six Cape batters while giving up seven hits.
