Cape Region native graduates from West Point

Mackenzie Irelan, a 2020 Cape Henlopen High School graduate from Harbeson, graduated May 25 from the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., having completed a challenging academic, physical and professional military training program. Tackling the past 47 months successfully, Irelan graduated with honors and earned a bachelor of science degree in human geography.

While at West Point, she earned the Distinguished Cadet Award, achieved dean’s list honors every semester and completed Air Assault School. She is commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army and will serve as an armor officer in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Irelan joined the Long Gray Line as a member of West Point’s 226th graduating class. It was also the 45th anniversary of the first class to graduate women.

The Class of 2024 comprised 1,036 cadets who received diplomas. Nearly 76% branched Combat Arms, and 182 have committed to additional service obligations. All 50 states were represented during graduation.
