Cape school board presents GEM awards
The Cape school board presented the Going the Extra Mile Award to four recipients selected by Lewes Elementary and Frederick Thomas Middle School for their support and dedication to their school communities.
Lewes Elementary selected paraeducator Edward Joyce and substitute teacher Teresa Flury, and Frederick Thomas selected behavior manager Haywood Burton and substitute teacher Robert Larsen.
According to Dr. Kimberly Corbridge, principal of Lewes Elementary, Joyce is “an invaluable member of our school community, embodying teamwork, initiative and positivity in all he does.
“Known for his collaborative spirit, he doesn’t hesitate to seek answers when needed, ensuring his support is always effective and informed,” Corbridge continued. “With exceptional organizational skills, he maintains schedules and responsibilities with precision, addressing issues proactively and resolving conflicts with calm professionalism.”
Flury was recognized for her ability to build a sense of trust and respect in the classroom, Corbridge said.
“Our teachers can always rely on her and are confident that her classes are in capable hands when they are not there,” she continued.
At Frederick Thomas Middle, Burton is able to form meaningful connections with students through his role as behavior manager to make a profound difference in their lives, said Principal Dave Frederick. Burton also serves as the school’s boys’ basketball coach and helps to supervise the Junior Justice League, through which he’s consistently advocating for student equity.
About Larsen, Frederick emphasized the ease with which he has handled every substituting opportunity, despite the challenges posed by unfamiliar situations.
“Mr. Larsen is always willing to help out and step up in any role we need him in,” Frederick said. “He communicates effectively, and his professionalism sets a very high standard for all substitutes. He consistently goes above and beyond to provide a safe, efficient and caring learning environment.”
Frederick emphasized that the school is very grateful for the work of Burton and Larsen, and that it’s a joy to have them in the building.
