Cape soccer grounds the Eagles 4-1

September 18, 2023

The Cape boys’ soccer team got scores from four different players in a 4-1 victory on the road at Smyrna.

“We weren’t sure what to expect going into this match, considering we haven’t played a full-length match since the Caravel scrimmage,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “Overall, we were very pleased with the results, knowing that it was game one of the season and an important conference game. We are very pleased with the combination play and builds through the middle third of the field. Evan Burris played really well for us, and we look to lean on him in the midfield.”

Burris started off the scoring by pounding a shot off a Cardin Benjamin rebound at the 12-minute mark. Collin Sivels hit the twine next on a give-and-go with Brady Spiegel at 28 minutes. Spiegel knocked one in off an Angel Haro-Simental assist to end the first half. The second half found the offense still clicking, with Jack Schell hitting the twine from Jersey Haines at 56 minutes.

Smyrna senior Hayden Vives Gonzalez scored the Eagles’ lone goal off an assist from Sean Mitchell.

The Vikings outshot the Eagles 10-5 and held a 5-2 edge in corners.

Cape junior keeper Jake Hutchison made nine stops, while Smyrna’s Alex Valle Roman made six saves.

The Vikings host Polytech Tuesday, Sept. 19, while the Eagles travel to Caesar Rodney.
