The 2022 Cape boys’ soccer team is going to have a familiar look on the sidelines this season as Vikings coach Patrick Kilby welcomes his father Steve to the varsity coaching staff.
The elder Kilby was a three-time DIAA state champion with the Indian River boys’ team. They defeated St. Elizabeth 3-0 in 2013, Caravel 1-0 in 2015 and Newark Charter 2-1 in 2020. He also has 17 Southern Division titles and six overall conference championships in his IR tenure.
“I am really excited to be involved with Cape, Patrick and his staff,” said Steve Kilby. “It’s a solid group, and I am happy to contribute however I can.”
Patrick Kilby is returning 13 players from the varsity squad that went 9-5-1 in 2021.
“Our expectations are high this season,” said Kilby. “We have one of the most focused groups in quite a few years. We’re looking for a successful season.”
Returning to the varsity sideline is assistant coach Joe Rupar. Tyler Nichols returns to coach the junior varsity. Brent Hochrein will coach the freshman squad and the goalkeepers for all three teams. Gary Montalto will return as a volunteer assistant.
Kilby feels Cape will get tough competition from Sussex Academy, Sussex Central, Indian River and Caesar Rodney.
The Vikings will open their 2022 campaign Friday, Sept. 9, at home against Delmar.
