The Cape soccer team celebrated the Class of 2023 with a 1-0 win over Sussex Central May 8 at Legends Stadium.
The Vikings missed on several goal chances in the back-and-forth game. Freshman Ava Brown had an opportunity to put Cape ahead with a penalty kick at 72 minutes, but the shot sailed wide left. One minute later, she made up for it as she pounded a blast from 20 yards out past Central goalie Kathy Sanchez-Garcia for the winning score.
The Vikings outshot the Knights 16-5 and held an 11-2 advantage in corners. Cape keeper Brianna Burrell made five saves, while Central goalie Kathy Sanchez-Garcia stopped 15 shots.
The Vikings made it five wins in a row with a 5-1 victory over Delmarva Christian May 10 at Champions Stadium.
Five different players hit the twine in the win. Emily Cook, Shannon Rath, Brown and Morgan Schubert tallied scores in the first half, with the Royals’ Megan Yoder scoring unassisted for Delmarva Christian’s lone tally. Harlee Graulich hit for the Vikings in the second half to finish the scoring.
Brown had two assists for Cape, while Cook, Schubert and Colleen Flynn each had a helper.
“We are very pleased with both results,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “Winning the Central game solidified second place in the Henlopen North. Winning the Delmarva Christian game moved us a little bit closer to a state tournament berth. We do need some help to get in. We shall see what happens over the next week with all the remaining games to be played in the state.”
The Vikings finish the regular season 8-6-1. Central moves to 6-6, while the Royals are 4-10.
