The Vikings softball team moved to 10-0 on the season with an 11-1 comeback victory over Sussex Tech April 17 at Cape’s Bill Cordrey Field.
The Vikings fell behind in the first inning when the Ravens plated one on a hard-hit ball by Tech pitcher Cierra Lewis that glanced off Jordyn Bowe’s glove at third, followed by a long single by Hayley Lawson.
Each team held the other scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when Hayden Hudson doubled and Abby Marsh singled to right to score Hudson. Marsh then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. She scored on another wild pitch to put two Cape runs on the board.
That was all Cape would need, as pitcher Abby Marsh and Vikings defense dug in and shut down the Ravens the rest of the way.
“We were really prepared for today’s game,” said Marsh. “We knew what we were facing; once we came back around in the lineup, we knew what to expect and had better at-bats. We communicated with our teammates about reading pitches and went from there. It’s been a long week, but I feel pretty good coming out of it with three wins.”
Cape added nine more in the fifth to pick up the mercy rule shortened game. It is the seventh mercy rule game in the 10 played by the Vikings.
Ava Calciano and Alivia Heers delivered with two RBIs apiece. Jordyn Bowe, Milena Buehler, Eden Frederick, Hayden Hudson and Abby Marsh each drove in a run.
“This was definitely a big win for us,” said left fielder Bri Windish. “Tech is a tough team, and we did a good job of staying in the game and putting pressure on them. It was a good team effort.”
Cape will hosts Woodbridge Thursday, April 24.
