Cape state park remains Delaware's best

August 9, 2024

The love people have for Cape Henlopen State Park was never more apparent than when hundreds turned out to Cape Henlopen High School in the dead of winter to express frustration with a proposed plan to add a restaurant on the dune at the main beach area.

While that was definitely a misstep by Delaware State Parks, the result has been something amazing. The Cape Region community is now more aware than ever of the happenings at Delaware’s crown jewel.

When the restaurant plan was first unveiled in 2022, only about 18 people showed up for the meeting. This year, nearly 200 turned out to hear Delaware State Parks’ plans for future capital projects

Many were relieved to see those plans do not include a restaurant. However, they do call for construction of a new bathhouse at the main beach area. Built in 1976, the bathhouse is due for replacement, and the new facility will include features for the modern world such as handicap-accessible bathrooms and showers, space for lifeguards and an updated snack shack.

Cape Henlopen State Park is a constantly evolving area. Originally built as a military base during World War II, much of the infrastructure is outdated and in dire need of upgrades or replacement. The fishing pier is a prime example.

Several times in recent years, Cape Gazette reporters and outdoors columnist Eric Burnley have reported about the declining condition of the pier. Slowly, Delaware State Parks is closing off more and more of the structure. For the sake of safety and improved access to a popular outdoor recreational activity, it’s time for a new pier. Although the price tag is quite steep at $22 million, it appears to be a worthy undertaking.

We also endorse plans to add to the park’s trail system. Outdoor activity is not only healthy, but also educational and social.

With myriad available activities and educational programming, Cape Henlopen remains the best state park in Delaware. The state’s current plans to build on that tradition will only make it better.
