The Cape boys’ swim team moved to 6-0 on the season in a 101-69 victory over Caesar Rodney Jan. 29 at the Milford Boys & Girls Club. The Caesar Rodney girls nipped the Lady Vikings 86-84. Cape is now 4-2 on the season.

Cape’s medley relay team of Thomas Weeks, Brian Fleming, Josh Turek and Josh Reinhold took first in 1:47.38. Turek followed with a time of 1:59.78 for first place in the 200 freestyle. Reinhold took top honors in the 50 freestyle in 23.41. Fleming won the 100 fly in 59.09. Marcus Gromofsky won the 100 free in 51.09. Reinhold, Gromofsky, L.B. Harrington and Aaron Senturk won the 200 free relay in 1:36.72. Gromofsky continued to dominate the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.55. Fleming, Turek, Thomas Weeks and Gromofsky finished the meet with a time of 3:37.34 to win the 400 free relay.

Caesar Rodney’s Ryan Woodsell took first in the 200 individual medley in 2:04.56. He also won the 500 free in 4:59.12. Rory Steele won the 100 breaststroke.

“This meet was definitely a must-win, and everyone was super excited for it,” Reinhold said. ”We knew that if everyone performed how they had been all season we would have a great shot at winning. Everybody on the team contributed from start to finish, and we came away with the victory. All of us need to stay safe and focused for these last four meets, because anything can happen in the pool. We need to be ready for conferences and states.”

On the girls’ side, Cape took first in the 50 free with Aya Daisey in 25.44. Her twin Amaya won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.06. The 200 free relay team of the Daisey sisters, Erin Morrissey and Julie Heffernan won in a time of 1:46.54.

Caesar Rodney garnered first in the 200 medley relay with Tori May, Georgia May, Zoe Edelman and Danielle Stewart swimming 2:01.78. Zoe Edelman won the 200 free in 2:13.19. Tori May took first in the 200 IM in 2:20.8. Georgia May won the 100 free in 58.76. Danielle Stewart took first in the 500 free with a time of 5:27.93. Tori May won the 100 backstroke in 1:03.73. Georgia May won the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.45, and the 400 free relay team of McKelden Miller, Tori May, Abby Cholewa and Zoe Edelman took first in 4:03.06.

“I am very proud at how everyone swam,” said senior Lindsay Rambo. “With it being such a close meet, I think it will give us the confidence and fire to try and beat them at conferences. All we need to do now is stay focused and continue to work hard at practice so we can come back even stronger.”

“It is always exciting to swim CR,” said Cape coach Bill Geppert, who is a Caesar Rodney alumnus. “They bring enthusiasm to everything they do, which is why they are so successful in sports. I am so proud of both our boys’ and girls’ teams for matching their intensity. Our boys haven't beaten them in a while, and it was awesome to see the joy on their faces. Our girls lost another heartbreaker by only two points. I felt so bad for them because they really gave their all. It will be exciting at conferences because we know what we have to do to win and the boys find themselves as the team with the bullseye on their back for the first time in a while. We will have to do a good job as coaches to keep both teams focused on getting better each and every practice.”

Cape was set to take on Indian River Monday, Feb. 2, at the Sussex Academy Aquatic Center.
