April 6, 2011

The Cape girls' track team lost prime-time performers and point producers Andrea Wells, Rebecca Pepper, Shellie Pearsall and Arvantis Smith to graduation, but the deep pool of diversified talent has been replenished as Cape’s 78-67 win over Caesar Rodney proved on the Riders’ track April 5. Cape broke a 12-year streak of losing to the Riders last season, and it took an across-the-board productive effort to pull it off.

Shanel Dickens won the open 400 meters in 61.5 seconds, the 800 in 2:47 and ran anchor on the winning 4-by-800-meter relay team. Kadijah Doughty won the shot put at 36-feet-5-inches, discus 87-feet-4-inches and led off the winning 4-by-100-meter team that also included Ahkeesha Duffy, Carissa Stevens and Tyra Weatherly.

Hannah Pepper got after her new event, the 300-meter hurdles, winning in 50.6, then also captured the triple jump at 34-feet-3-inches and placed second in the high jump at 4-feet-8-inches.

Ali Coning doubled down, winning the 1,600 meters in 6:01, the 3,200 in 13:12 and led off the victorious 4-by-800-meter relay that also included Elizabeth Sparks, Juli Kyritsis, and Shanel Dickens, finishing in 11:10. Kayla Albertella, who also plays soccer, won the pole vault by clearing 8 feet.

The depth necessary to ice the victory came in the 100 hurdles with Tyra Weatherly's second place 17.8 and Amanda Hurst's third at 18.4.

In the 100-meter dash, Ahkeesha Duffy placed second in 13.3, and Johnesha Warren crossed third in 13.5.

Megan Hart ran 69.0 in the 400 for third place. Tyra Weatherly's 52.5 earned a second in the 300. Johnesha Warren came in third in the 200 in 27.2, and Emma Trugman finished third in the 3,200 in 14:46.

Tiana Evans at 27-feet-2 and Vonshe Johnson at 26-feet-9 placed second and third in the shot put, respectively, and Alexus Duffy's throw of 67-feet-7 was good for second in the discus.

The girls also beat Laurel in the tri meet 138-4.

Cape will next compete in the Keith Burgess Invitational Saturday, April 9. Action on the track will commence at 11 a.m.
