Cape unified basketball team falls to Indian River

The Cape Henlopen unified basketball team battled a very good Indian River squad Feb. 8, falling 21-14 at the Cape gymnasium. Cape moves to 0-2, while the Indians are 1-1.
Cape unified partners Jayden Sheppard and Lizzie Shea each scored four points in the contest. Athletes Sara Perotta, Brooke Kochinsky and Jerome Kochinsky each had two.
Indian River athlete Gabriel Mouynivong led the Indians with 15 points. Athletes Nariah Showell, Lanc Govens and unified partner Reece Stoned each hit for two.
“We started this season with only three returning players,” said Cape coach Jenn Hagan. “So to develop our team dynamics, we spent many practices growing and supporting each other in a variety of drills. The partners have shown such amazing enthusiasm to be peer leaders in our school. The athletes have learned so much from the partners, who are a true example of what our program is all about. The interaction between the teammates is what makes the coaching staff extraordinarily proud of all the players.”
Cape will travel to Caesar Rodney Tuesday, Feb. 16, to take on the Riders, while the Indians will host Seaford.
