Going out with a bang, the Cape unified flag football team concluded its regular season Nov. 6, by scoring some serious points, but falling to Indian River 84-68, a score often reserved for basketball.
Leading the Vikings with two touchdowns apiece were Zane Richardson, Xavier Zimmer and Michael Anthony. Richardson added a touchdown pass to his total.
Ashlynn Panyko, who is always close to Zimmer on the sidelines, said it’s always a good time when No. 13 scores.
“When Xavier scores, it's really fun, because he just keeps running. He doesn't stop until he knows there's no more room left to run, and then he comes back,” Panyko said. “Everyone gets really excited!”
Seniors Laiya Ward, Sophia Adams and Brycen Stewart wrapped up their campaigns by reaching paydirt as well. Freshman Luke Archer ran for and threw a touchdown pass to senior Eddie Ghabour, while Austin Hastings connected with Rylie Cathcart for a touchdown.
Scoring her first touchdown of the year, Adams said she was excited and happy to hit paydirt.
Defensively, Hastings and senior Ronnie LeRoy picked up sacks, while Panyko picked off two passes and Richardson grabbed another.
The Vikings wrap up their regular season with a 4-4 record, tying Mt. Pleasant and Smyrna with a .500 record, finishing behind Caesar Rodney, Newark Charter and IR. They await seeding in the DIAA tournament.
