The Cape Henlopen volleyball team ended its 2020 season with a disappointing 25-14, 25-13, 25-18 loss to 12th seed Delaware Military Academy in the DIAA state tournament quarterfinals Dec. 8 at Cape.
Sophomore setter Megan Smith led the Vikings with 18 assists and six digs. Rileigh Wilson put down nine kills. Bre Kusen slammed five kills and bumped five digs, while Katie Knarr and Emily Lamb bumped eight and seven digs, respectively.
DMA setter Delaney Schultz put up 31 assists, while Kaylee Longueira bumped 31 digs. Riley Sullivan knocked down 12 kills.
“Tonight certainly stings,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “Not only because it marks the end of our season, but because we weren’t able to execute our game plan. I credit DMA fully. They were an extremely intelligent team that threw a ton of different looks at us offensively, ran tempo that forced our block to be late, and defensively never let a ball hit the ground. We had some plans that we thought if executed could get us some points, but we didn’t do it consistently enough.”
Coupe gave kudos to his team for their 11-3 season, where they we chosen as the DIAA tournament’s fourth seed.
“Looking at the season as a whole, I’m extremely proud of these ladies,” said Coupe. “They were able to push this team to new heights and continue to set the new standard for our program. They’ve been a pleasure to coach. To the seven seniors, Angelica and Bre Kusen, Erin Morrissey, Katie Knarr, Madison Mahoney, Jocelyn Leach and Emily Lamb, we coaches are very thankful. From where we were as a program their freshman year to where we are now is a testament to their work ethic, sacrifice and belief in self. I look forward to ushering in a new team next year and trying to return back to where we left, and push ourselves further.”
