Cape volleyball is young but experienced for 2023 schedule

August 24, 2023

The Lady Vikings went 10-5 in the 2022 regular season and 1-6 overall after the 2-3 loss to Dover in the first round of the DIAA Tournament, but the Cape volleyball team has some new young faces this season and head coach Tyler Coupe is excited about the outlook for the squad in 2023.

“We had a good three days of tryouts,” said Coupe. “We had 48 girls come out with almost 25 of them being freshmen, a great sign for our program. Our JV squad has a solid four returning players, accompanied by a group of athletic and talented newcomers that coach Logan (Shuttleworth) and Momma (Pam Coupe) are excited to see piece it together as they develop. On our varsity squad, we kept 15 athletes. We’re relatively young and inexperienced, graduating eight players, and roughly all of them having starting or partial time positions. These early-season practices were really focusing on our out-of- system play and making sure we’re able to apply pressure to our opponents when our first touch isn’t in system. Our serving has been effective and remains a priority for us.”

“We have a lot of versatile players,” said senior Lily Joyce. “I don’t think we dominate in one position. Overall we are very consistent. We have very aggressive players.”

“Our play day at Smyrna showed us areas that need immediate addressing,” Coupe said. “But what was also obvious was that the attitude of this group isn’t fazed by much. They’re able to take punches and not get deterred from their objective. The morale will be something that will make this group different from our past Cape teams. We’re excited for Saturday to see ourselves vs. some of the top teams in the state.”

Cape will host a 10-team play day Saturday, Aug. 26.
