The Cape Henlopen girls’ and boys’ winter track teams competed Dec. 15 in the Milford Polar Bear Invitational at Milford High School under reasonably warm 57-degree conditions.

On the girls’ side of the action, the Vikings won seven of the 15 events in the six-team field that included Sussex Central, Milford, Sussex Tech, Sussex Academy and Polytech.

Sophomore Hannah Maney won the 400-meter dash in 1:02.81, while senior Tia Jarvis won the 800 in 2:32.34. Junior Alexa Dougherty won the 1,600 in 5:57.01, while junior Katie Kuhlman won the 3,200 run in 12:12.65.

In the field, Allison Head won the high jump in 4-feet-6-inches, while Haley Archambault won the shot in 29-4.

The Vikings also won the 800 relay and the 1,600 relay. Maney, sophomore Montana Jones, sophomore Grace Wiggins and Jarvis teamed up to win the 800 relay in 1:52.71, while the team of Wiggins, freshman Lina Frederick, sophomore Landon Diehl and Dougherty won the 1,600 relay in 4:32.77.

The meet was a first-time experience for many of the 60 girls on the Vikings’ roster; however, many season-best and all-time personal-best performances were turned in by the Vikings.

On the boys’ side, the Vikings won four events and a relay on the day, as Ryan Baker won the 1,600 in convincing fashion in a time of 4:30.86 after going through the first quarter-mile in just 62 seconds. John Small won the long jump in 21-2, while Angelo Ballard-Rose won the triple jump in 36-2 ¾. Malaki Lewis won the shot in 38-9, and the Vikings won the 800 relay in 1:35.73.
