The Cape Henlopen wrestling team won three close dual meets in less than 24 hours last weekend.
They opened with a 38-29 win at St. Georges Jan. 31, then traveled to Germantown Academy Feb. 1 for a pair of duals against Saint Mark’s and host Germantown. The Vikings defeated Saint Mark’s 33-30 followed by a win determined by tiebreaker over Germantown. Following the 38-38 match, the win was decided by forfeits. Cape had none, while Germantown forfeited five matches.
The win over St. Georges wasn’t secured until the final bout at 150, where Nick Walker won by major decision over Nick DiTomasso 14-3.
Cape got wins from Aidan Baum (157), 11-10 decision over Ezra Reyers; Jacob Goodsell (175), win by injury default; Luke Arnold-Decyk (190), 7-2 decision over Aidan Dawson; Patrick Donahue (215), fall over Thomas Lamborn (0:39); Blake Walker (113), 9-1 major decision over Billy Pernot; Austin Guerrieri (120), fall over Maddox Stanley (1:29); and Cale Baker (126), win by fall over Albert Weismiller (2:29).
“We had guys come through in swing matches, and that was a difference,” said coach Chris Mattioni.
The close wins over Saint Mark’s and Germantown were achieved through overcoming losses by Austin Guerrieri, Cape’s defending state champion, to Clifton Bakhsh of Saint Mark’s in sudden-victory overtime and to Jack Baron of Germantown by a 10-1 major decision.
Guerierri had beaten Bakhsh in the 106-pound state final in 2024. Jack Baron of Germantown beat Bakhsh 4-0.
Cape will wrestle at Caesar Rodney Wednesday, Feb. 5. The Riders clinched the Henlopen Conference dual-meet title by beating Sussex Central 35-24 Jan 31. The Riders lost the next night to top-ranked Salesianum 45-21.
Sussex Central rebounded from the loss to Caesar Rodney with a 37-27 win at Delaware Military Academy.
“Dual meets are all about matchups,” said Central coach Shane Miller. “There are several really good teams in Henlopen North and Division I.”
