Cape's Army JROTC holds annual awards ceremony

The Cape Henlopen High School Army JROTC Program conducted its 18th annual awards ceremony May 22 at the high school theater. The ceremony is always conducted at the end of the academic year and recognizes the achievements of cadets dating back to the annual summer camp conducted in June 2012.

Over 60 cadets received awards for a wide variety of activities including academic, JROTC, military, citizenship, leadership, athletics, classroom performance, drill, marksmanship, color guard, physical fitness, conduct, perfect attendance, patriotism, and community service. Awards were presented by a wide range of national and local veterans organizations, community service organizations, the U.S. Army Cadet Command, and the Cape Henlopen School District.

In addition, the JROTC Program was honored with the presentation of awards from The Friends of the Lewes Library, Beebe Medical Center Auxiliary, and the Jefferson Award Committee for community service activities.

The guest speaker for the ceremony was Noble Prettyman, a member of the Cape Henlopen school board and a veteran of service with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Prettyman’s comments, directed at the cadets, focused on being good citizens of their school, community, nation, and their families.

The most significant awards were the Fifth Avenue Jewelers Memorial Saber presented to cadets Alexandra Mueller and Sylvester Lovett; the Lance Corporal Richard Clifton Memorial Trophies presented to Cadets Kevin Wright, Robert Prettyman, Cody Ross, Alexandria Dominick, and Sylvester Lovett; the Cadet of the Year trophy presented to Cadet Alexandra Atsidis; the Daughters of the American Revolution Medal presented to Cadet Taylor Cirillo; the Jefferson Community Service Award presented to Cadets Alexandria Mueller and Sylvester Lovett; and presentation of the Department of the Army Civilian Service Award presented to Diane Couchman for her four years of support and work with the JROTC Program.

The ceremony concluded with the change of command ceremony where Cadet Col. Colby Garbutt passed command of the JROTC Battalion to the new commander Cadet Lt. Col. Cody Ross and the naming of the new cadet leadership for the 2013-14 academic year. The new subordinate leaders are: Executive Officer John Dean; company commanders Cassidy Blevins, Teague Elliott; Sgt. Maj. Travis Wharton; Operations Officer Drew Stevens; Personnel Officer Amber Cluesman; Security Officer Arnissa Gibson-Barnes; Public Information Officer Michael Littlefield; and Logistics Officer Austin Kitchen.
