Carl Dale Nichols, superb woodworker

May 28, 2023

Carl Dale Nichols, 67, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2023, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was born May 20, 1955, in Salisbury, Md., to Frances and Howard Nichols. Carl was a first-class woodworker known for his beautiful staircases, cabinetry and furniture.

He was a lifetime member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Laurel. Carl was a kind and generous man who enjoyed helping others less fortunate.

Carl is survived by his ex-wife and lifetime companion, Bonnie (Osterwalder) Morris, and beloved dogs Ditto, Bella Bee and Harley. He is survived by his brother Brent Nichols and nephew David Nichols, both of Laurel, and three nieces: Ginger Nichols Williams of Delmar, Georgia Nichols, and Gretchen Nichols of Salisbury. Carl was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Nichols; father, Howard Nichols of Delmar; brother Gary Nichols of Laurel; and Craig Nichols of Delmar. Also Emil Ostewalder, father-in-law and devoted friend, of Salisbury; and special friends Danny Hastings, Jim Middleton and Pete Green. Many beloved animal family members of all shapes, sizes and species also mourn his loss.

Carl was born with a genetic condition known as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. He spent his fourth-grade year in John Hopkins participating in a study of EDS. As a result of this, he had nine back surgeries. He was most grateful to Dr. Scott McGovern of POA in Salisbury. He performed Carl’s ninth back surgery, which made him four inches taller and made him once again feel like a man.

In adherence with Carl's wishes, there will be no service. Those wishing to honor Carl's memory may make contributions to the Ehlers Danlos Association or their local SPCA.

Rest in peace, Carl. You will be missed by all who knew you. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting hsdfuneralhome.com.

Arrangements are in the care of the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home in Laurel.
