The Chantels, the groundbreaking African American girl group of rhythm and blues, performed in Lewes to raise funds for the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice. The concert was held at the Cape Henlopen High School theater June 18, as a part of the Juneteenth Celebration.
The Chantels’ hit “Maybe” was ranked 199 in Rolling Stone’s Magazine’s 500 Greatest Hits of All Time in 2004.
Proceeds from the concert will support the SDARJ’s current and expanding programs and activities, all of which are aimed at ending racism and its corrosive consequences. SDARJ is a nonpartisan organization with a mission to educate, inform and advocate for racial justice, equality and fair opportunity.
The 2022 SDARJ Charlotte King Scholarship winners are Nicolas Alexander Francois, Tia Jarvis and Tyller Maltbie of Cape Henlopen High School; Trinity Nicole Harris of Sussex Central; Jacquez and Ashlyn Toppin of Laurel; and Anjolie Japhia Suberro of Woodbridge.
