Charles J. Canniff, veteran, computer programmer

Charles J. Canniff, 66, fondly known as Charlie, of Millsboro, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Feb. 7, 1958, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Charles and Judith (Bates) Canniff.

Charlie grew up in Massachusetts, graduating from Old Rochester High School before earning his bachelor’s degree from University of Delaware. A proud veteran, he served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1976-81.

Charlie was a passionate and talented programmer, beginning his journey by building his computers as early as 1976. His career was spent designing accounting software and working as a video game technician. He was known for his skill and dedication in the tech world, and his curiosity and joy for exploring the latest advancements in computing.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Charles had many interests that defined him. He was a true LEGO enthusiast and collector, spending countless hours assembling intricate sets and building an impressive collection. His adventurous spirit extended to his love of geocaching, which took him and his favorite dog, Beezle, adventuring far and wide.

Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Janet L. Canniff, of Millsboro; his stepsons, Richard W. Collison Jr. (Alina) of Millsboro, and Robert W. Collison (Betty) of Aurora, Colo.; and his cherished grandchildren, CJ, Reece, Brayden and Teddy Collison. He also leaves behind his sister, Robin Raymond of Louisville, Ky.; brother, Arion Canniff of Joseph, Ore.; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins who will miss him dearly.

In honoring Charles's wishes, services will be private.

Charles’s memory will be treasured by his family and friends, who will remember him as a devoted family man, a dedicated serviceman, and a true tech enthusiast who followed his passions.
