CHEER boot scoots on Monday nights

August 17, 2024

“Oh, heel toe, do si do, come on baby let's go boot scootin’,” – Brooks & Dunn.

On Monday nights at the CHEER Center in Georgetown, you’ll hear the click of heels and the sliding of the soles as dancers do heel and toe splits enjoying the camaraderie of line dancing to Buckles & Boots line dance instructor Lily Parsons.

“The class focuses on teaching basic steps and routines to those new to line dancing or looking to improve or even refresh their skills,” said Parsons. “Anyone who attends will learn simple dance patterns and terminology, and gradually progress to more complex sequences, all while being part of a fun and social atmosphere.”

Parsons starts each Monday session with a 15-minute beginner review from 5:15 to 5:30 p.m., when even the veteran dancers join in to help reinforce basic moves. Then all levels are welcome to scuff, brush and sugarfoot until 7:30.

It costs $5 to attend. Beverages can be purchased and attendees can bring snacks. CHEER is a nonprofit, and proceeds from line dancing support programs for seniors.

“I started the program about six months ago and we average 50 dancers weekly, and it’s a continuous program,” said CHEER Hospitality and Events Director Debra Dodd. “One of my goals when I accepted the job as director of events was to bring the arts and entertainment to the CHEER Community Center and I thought dance would be a perfect start. I have been line dancing for years, and also wanted to offer something to the community for mind and body health, and this is a great form of exercise, is positive and uplifting, and we’ve created friendships and an awesome dance family. Our dance instructor Lily is very passionate about line dancing, and in making sure people are getting it and learning how to dance.”

“Lily and Deb [Dodd] have done an amazing job of bringing this community together with the love for line dancing,” said veteran dancer Jennifer Lexy Lefebvre. “We all look forward to our Monday nights here together at the CHEER Center.”

CHEER will host a Line Dance Party from 6 to 10 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23. Admission is $10, and a cash bar will be available. It is open to the public.
