Thirty CHEER staff and more than 90 volunteers joined forces early June 6 to pack and distribute 300 food boxes as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farmers to Families Food Box Program for seniors.
Staff and volunteers unloaded a trailer filled with tons of food – including produce, meat, cheese products and milk – and sorted and packed distribution boxes. The line of cars was steady during the 10 a.m. to noon distribution in the parking lot of the CHEER Activity Center off Route 9 in Georgetown.
The Families Food Box Program is a partnership with national, regional and local suppliers to purchase up to $3 billion in fresh produce, dairy and meat products to supplement citizens who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
CHEER is an independent nonprofit that services the needs of senior citizens in Sussex County. It is the first nonprofit in Delaware to take advantage of the Farmers to Families program to aid its senior members.
