February 10, 2023

There’s just something about a fire truck that captivates children. Whether it’s the sleek chrome, bright lights or cool equipment, most kids can’t help but stare in amazement at the life-saving apparatus.

On Feb. 2, the Lewes Fire Department, Delaware State Police and SmashMouth Burgers set up shop at the Children’s Beach House House Safety and Wellness Fair. Inside the venue were more than 25 organizations set up at informational booths.

Joining staff from Children’s Beach House were representatives from Alternative Solutions, Beebe Healthcare, Beyond the Bar United, Cape Henlopen School District, Cape Pharmacy, Catholic Charities, Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, Delaware State Fire School, Delaware State Police, Delaware Technical Community College, Food Bank of Delaware, Joshua M. Freeman Foundation/Freeman Arts Pavilion, Greater Good Events, Habitat for Humanity, Holistic Coach LLC, Just Be Holistic, Lewes Police Department, Lewes Fire Department, McGough Academy School of Irish Dance, Midway Motion & Fitness, Pathways to Success, Read Aloud Delaware, R.O.O.T.S. Youth Development Program, Run Sinayah Run Foundation, SmashMouth Burgers, Soul Vikality, Stand by Me, Techno Goober, and The Dental Group.

Kids were invited to check out the Lewes FD vehicles and watch a K-9 demonstration from the Delaware State Police while outside. As they ventured inside, they were encouraged to interact with props each booth offered. Beebe Healthcare had three different-sized dummies for CPR training, Delaware Center for the Inland Bays brought along specimens to examine, and the Freeman Foundation had a mural for painting the answer to what wellness means. Face painting was also offered.

The evening concluded with a special dance exhibition from the McGough Academy School of Irish Dance. Guests were treated to a few different routines from the girls, most of whom were just beginning their tutelage. The Lewes branch just opened in September 2022, operating out of Midway Motion and Fitness in Rehoboth Beach.
