Cinema Art Theater to present new films Oct. 14

October 13, 2022

New films opening at the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater Friday Oct. 14, include “Buried,” “Facing Monsters” and “Both Sides of the Blade.”

A gripping award-winning documentary, “Buried” is based on events and circumstances surrounding a deadly natural disaster. In 1982, a massive avalanche descended on Alpine Meadows Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe, Calif., triggering a desperate five-day search for eight missing people. “Buried” chronicles the miraculous rescue efforts and the traumas that still haunt the survivors today

A thrilling documentary with stunning cinematography, “Facing Monsters” digs deep into the psyche of a famous Australian “slab surfer.” Kerby Brown must conquer the waves. And the bigger, taller, more powerful, and unpredictable they are, the stronger his burning desire to surf, even if he might be engulfed in them, never to return. Like many Aussies, he grew up near the ocean and spent his youth facing mightier and mightier waves, pushing the limits of his body and mind. The cameras follow Brown as he surfs where nobody has ever dared to: on and underwater, from a bird’s eye view, and through the eyes of his father and brother, who join him in the water. Behind and between the spectacular sights, the film reveals Brown’s remarkable personality and the difficulties it poses to his family. What monsters will he face on those waves? And will a severe injury cause him to quit?

In “Both Sides of the Blade,” a French romantic drama from acclaimed writer-director Claire Denis, a woman’s life spirals out of control when she becomes involved in a passionate love triangle. In a haunting and cautionary tale, contented couple (Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lindon) see their lives explode by a chance encounter in the street.

Admission is $9 for members and $11.50 for general audiences. For screening times and to purchase tickets, go to rehobothfilm.com.
