Coast Guard investigation underway on Pegasus

After long tow, damaged 52-foot sailboat sinks in Lewes-Rehoboth Canal
September 28, 2023

The U.S. Coast Guard has released more details on the plight of the 52-foot sailboat Pegasus.

According to public information officer Matthew West, the sailboat was near the Brandywine Light in Delaware River headed to Delaware Bay when it was hit by another vessel or an obstruction in the water and started taking on water through a 4-foot gash in the hull.

The SOS call came in to the Coast Guard at 12:51 p.m., Sept. 22, and the four crew members were rescued. Not long after, a Tow Boat US crew arrived and started the long tow to Angler’s Marina on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal in Lewes. The crew was able to get the sinking boat near the docks in Lewes before it completely submerged.

On Sept. 25, divers and two Tow Boat US crews returned to the location, raised the sunken boat and towed it to the marina.
