Collegiate golf returns to Cape Region

After a successful first event last fall, Rehoboth Beach Country Club is proud to announce the return of women’s collegiate golf to the Cape Region Oct. 25 and 26.

The Delaware Women's Golf Invitational is an NCAA tournament sponsored by the University of Delaware’s women’s golf team, coached by Patty Post.

Last year’s competition was a huge success, featuring some great golf in challenging conditions, with high winds causing creative club choices on the bayfront par 3 19th hole.

In addition to the Blue Hens, several other Mid-Atlantic schools are scheduled to participate. They include Delaware State University, Georgetown University, the University of Pennsylvania, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the University of Towson. Schools making the trip to the beach from farther away include Long Island University, the University of Richmond, and Central Connecticut University.

“The University of Delaware Blue Hens are proud to host this event for a second time,” said head coach Patty Post, who has also been honored as the LPGA’s National Coach of the Year. “Rehoboth Beach Country Club exemplifies some of the best golf conditions offered in our state, and the hospitality and support provided by their membership is second to none. Plus, the visiting teams really enjoy the proximity to the beach and have dubbed the tournament the ‘Battle at the Beach.’”

The teams will play 36 holes Saturday and 18 Sunday. Upon completion of play, awards will be given to teams as well as individuals.

The members of Rehoboth Beach Country Club invite golf fans of all ages to come out and support these college athletes throughout the weekend. There will also be a special opportunity to support the men and women of the U.S. military at this year’s tournament.

“This is just one example of our commitment to grow and foster the game of golf in our region,” said Ed Perry, president of Rehoboth Beach Country Club.

Kings Creek CC holds mixed Ryder Cup format tournament

Fifty-four Kings Creek Country Club members divided into two teams Oct. 4 to compete in a new one-day match play event patterned loosely after the Ryder Cup format - the Kings Creek Cup.

Kings Creek Head Golf Professional Kevin Wiest captained the Blue Team, while Kings Creek Director of Instruction Chris Krueger captained the Green Team. In all matches, men's pairs competed against the other team’s men, and ladies’ pairs competed against the other team’s ladies.

Each team played an 18-hole match in three different formats, with the winners in each six-hole format earning teams one point for a win, and a half point for a tie. The first six-hole match was a Two-Person Scramble Match; the second six-hole match was an Alternate Shot Match and the third six-hole match was a Better Ball of Partners Match.

Wiest said, “With all the interest generated by the recent Ryder Cup, Kings Creek wanted to bring the same team competition challenge and excitement to our members by launching this new event. We are proud to refer to it as the Annual Kings Creek Cup, because the enthusiasm of our members on the two competing teams guarantees we will be bringing the event back next year.”

The Green team fought back against the early lead established by the Blue team, rallying to end the scheduled matches in a 21-21 tie. In a sudden-death playoff, Green Captain Krueger and Diane Herndon decided the match with a net birdie on the second playoff hole against Wiest and Stefanie Herndon.

In addition to Krueger and Herndon, the winning Green Team consisted of the following: Hope Adams, Pete Brockstedt, John Buzerak, Bruce Carrick, Ed Clark, Nick Del Campo, Julie Dickson, Linda Eicher, Jenifer Flinchbaugh, Tom Forrest, Prabhat Karapurkar, Ruth Lauver, Steve Lett, Pattie Magee, Bob Minutella, Gene Musi, David Pie, John Purple Sr., Andy Rowe, Winnie Sewell, Evans Shearon, Lisa Smith, Denise Stewart, Sean Toner, Lee Tull and Judy Wetzel.
