Consumers warned of dangers from odorless propane
The Attorney General’s Office is warning consumers that some propane shipped to Delaware may be missing sufficient amounts of a chemical that causes the odorless gas to have a smell.
What happened
|
BP Products North America Inc. purchases propane produced at a Morris, Ill. facility of gas distributor Aux-Sable Liquid Products, which it sells to two customers.
BP Products North America Inc. (BPNAI) learned from one of its customers Aug. 31, that propane produced at this facility may have been missing enough of the odorizing agent. BPNAI sent a letter to 12 states, including Delaware, notifying them that propane from that facility could have been shipped to their states. |
Although the potential lack of an odorant does not make propane unsafe, it makes it more difficult to detect a leak or to realize the gas is being emitted near an ignition source.
The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Unit recommends taking the following precautions:
• Contact propane retailers or distributors to see if a delivery is part of the affected propane
• Do not smoke or maintain open flames near propane tanks or indoors
• Do not attempt to check the propane at a home or business ; instead, talk to the propane distributor or retailer
• Those who have a gas grills should make sure the propane connections to the grills are firmly secured.
Consumers who learn their propane is part of a nonodorized shipment should file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Unit by calling 800-220-5424 or visiting attorneygeneral.delaware.gov/consumers
