Dance society to host Contra Dance March 20

March 7, 2020

The Lower Delaware Dance Society, a traditional dance group based in Ocean View, hosts a Contra Dance Friday, March 20, from 7:30 to 10 p.m., at the Metropolitan Community Church, 19369 Plantation Road, Rehoboth Beach. A beginner’s workshop starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 per person, $8 for students. All are welcome; partners are not required, and no dance experience is needed. “Kindred Spirits” will provide live music, and caller Ann Fallon will lead dancers through the steps.

The Lower Delaware Dance Society is an affiliate member of the Country Dance and Song Society, a nonprofit organization that promotes traditional arts at events across the country. LDDS was formed to expand opportunities for traditional dancing and to attract new enthusiasts in lower Sussex County and surrounding areas. According to co-founder, Ginny Seaman, “Our dances are attracting larger and larger followings as people discover how fun Contra dancing is. We encourage everyone to come out and try it.”

Contra dancing traces its origins to 17th century England and France. Similar dance styles include Irish, English Country, and American square dancing. Long lines of pairs dance to steps announced by the caller as they move up and down the lines. Everyone dances with everyone else over the course of the evening. Singles are paired with a partner, so everyone can participate.

Says co-founder Donald Muller, “Contra dancing is fun, social, and easy to learn. We have terrific musicians and a great caller for this dance. Whether you’ve danced before or are new to Contra dancing, you’ll have a wonderful time.”

The Lower Delaware Dance Society was founded by Muller and Seaman, a husband and wife who moved to Ocean View from Poughkeepsie, N.Y. They are avid contra dancers and are delighted to bring the joy of dancing to other residents of lower Sussex County.
