DAR Nathaniel Mitchell Chapter welcomes local historian
The Nathaniel Mitchell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution heard from Laurel author Chris Slavens during its April 9 meeting. Slavens has written several books on local history, including “The Roofed Graves of Delmarva.” The book investigates the use of wooden, shingled grave covers in cemeteries in Sussex County and in Wicomico County, Md., from the 1840s into the 20th century. He presented photographs and discussed roofed graves in the area.
Later in the meeting, American History Chair Mary Lee Phillips gave a presentation to honor past Regent Barbara Paulish as a woman in American history. Paulish has held several offices in both the state and local DAR. She has been instrumental in getting the chapter involved in helping veterans at the Home of the Brave and teaching others about conservation.
