Delaware Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement has been named the National Liquor Law Enforcement Association's Agency of the Year for 2016, highlighting the division's dedication to creating innovative programs which both promote public safety and increase agency effectiveness. DATE was announced as the annual winner during the 2016 NLLEA Annual Conference that was held Sept. 7-9 in Indianapolis, Ind.
DATE's creation of the Citizens Police Academy, which was designed to foster a better understanding of its operations and broaden the lines of communication with the community to make Delaware an even safer place to live, and the Youth Summer Academy, which taught cadets various law enforcement functions, self-discipline and physical fitness, education on drugs and alcohol, the dangers of underage drinking and substance abuse and more, were cited as key factors in determining this year's honoree.
Furthermore, DATE was recognized for hosting the NLLEA National Training Symposium in April 2016 in Dover. Alcohol enforcement officers and regulators from around the United States attended the week-long training. Members of the division spent countless hours organizing the conference in partnership with the NLLEA and the associated logistics during the conference. Several DATE agents served as instructors along with instructors from around the country providing training on topics related to fake IDs, social networking and cyberspace investigations, intelligence-sharing measures, Illegal gambling and special events enforcement, to name a few.
In 2016, DATE intensified efforts to educate the public about what the division does and the value the division lends to law enforcement, the alcohol industry and the communities they serve. The partnerships forged in 2016 were unprecedented. "This award is a true reflection of the hardworking men and women who are committed to our core values and being part of a professional law enforcement agency. We will continue to look for ways to increase our agency's effectiveness while keeping the people of Delaware safe," said Director John Yeomans. For more information, go to www.date.delaware.gov.
