Delaware Hospice honors Mary Ann Hammond for 25 years of volunteerism
Mary Ann Hammond was honored for 25 years of volunteer service at Delaware Hospice’s 2012 Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the Cordrey Center in Millsboro. President and CEO Susan Lloyd said, “Delaware Hospice has been privileged to have such a gifted and compassionate person as Mary Ann devote time and energy to its mission of caring for the community.”
In 1987, Hammond saw an appeal for volunteers in the newspaper. She didn’t know a lot about hospice but called to learn more about it, signed up for training and has been there ever since.
She recalled, “I visited with my first patient for a year, became good friends with him and his wife, and found it a rewarding experience. Since then, I’ve met some wonderful, interesting people. Patients and families never cease to amaze me with their courage, inspiration, strength and even humor. Most of the time, I’ve left their homes with a smile on my face.”
Hammond’s first love as a Delaware Hospice volunteer was patient care. Over the years, as her personal situation evolved, she has also volunteered in the office for medical records, and with the organization of the Festival of Trees. But she loves to visit with patients who are friends. She said, “I think patients prefer to see a familiar face, and I do like entering a home and hearing, ‘Oh, Mary Ann, I’m so glad you’re here!’”
Friends wonder how she can work with individuals facing end-of-life issues, and she said, “It’s not for everyone, but there are so many different volunteer roles available. I recommend to anyone interested to attend the training and learn how many ways you can help Delaware Hospice.”
Her husband, Jack Hammond, is also a volunteer and has helped out at Festival of Trees for five years.
Twenty-five years is a long time. Hammond said, “I really believe in Delaware Hospice. It’s a marvelous organization. We never know when we’re going to need it. My experiences have shown me how to be more humble, more patient and respectful. I like the people and the camaraderie very much. I thank Delaware Hospice for giving me the opportunity to serve for 25 years!”
