Delaware Military Museum to open in Wilmington April 15
Delaware's first museum dedicated to its military will open at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 15, after over a decade of effort. A diverse group of dedicated volunteers has been assembling educational exhibits and displays meant to inspire citizens with the words and deeds of Delaware's uniformed servicemen and women over a history spanning 350 years. The museum includes Delaware's most extensive military library and archive.
Retired Army Brig. Gen. Terry Wiley, foundation chairman, said, "We hope to fill a critical gap in our citizens’ understanding of Delaware's history, especially among our youth, and we intend to do it in a fun and interesting way."
The featured first exhibit will honor the centennial of the First World War, with uniforms, maps, images and artifacts of the Great War. At 2 p.m., Kennard Wiggins, author of "Delaware in World War I," will give a talk based on his book.
Other exhibits will include Delaware's role as a colony and in the Revolutionary War. Re-enactors of the First Delaware Regiment will be on hand to lend a touch of living history.
The new museum is co-located with the Delaware National Guard Wilmington Readiness Center and the Mid County Senior Center on First Regiment Road (GPS), in Sherwood Park II just off McKennan's Church Road. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.
