Special Olympics Summer Games take place at UD

June 30, 2022

More than 500 athletes took to the sports venues June 24-25 at the University of Delaware for the 51st annual Special Olympics Summer Games, where the competition was fierce in the events of swimming, track & field, bocce, powerlifting, softball and tennis. More than 150 coaches and 1,000 day-of volunteers helped make the competitions run smoothly and provide fun for all involved. Entertainment and activities were held at the Olympic Village behind the fieldhouse for athletes, their families and spectators.

Special Smiles, Healthy Hearing, Opening Eyes and Fit Feet offered health screenings for the athletes. A Friday evening barbecue and dance was enjoyed by all.

“After two years without our traditional Summer Games, we were thrilled with how the committee returned and worked tirelessly to ensure a great experience for our athletes and coaches, who in turn did what they always do, inspired us with their performances like never before,” said David Halley, president and CEO of Special Olympics Delaware.
