In April, both Delaware Technical Community College baseball and softball head coaches achieved milestones for career wins.
Baseball coach Stu Madden won his 100th game April 2 with a doubleheader sweep of Mercer County Community College. Then, softball head coach Guy Wilkins won his 150th game April 18, with a doubleheader sweep of Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville.
Madden has been the Delaware Tech head baseball coach since 2018 and has an overall record of 107-63-1 as of April 24. Assistant coaches Mike DiCarlo and Bobby Betts have been with him during that entire time.
“It feels like it happened very fast,” Madden said. “I credit the hard work and commitment of our players and coaches. I have outstanding assistant coaches, and we try to recruit goal-oriented student-athletes that have goals beyond our program.
“A coach is only as good as the quality of people/players that he brings into the program. We have been lucky enough to have a great group of young men take a chance on our program and help lead us to national success in recent time.”
During his time as head coach, Madden has had 11 National Junior College Athletic Association Region 19 All-Region players on his teams, and they finished runner-up in the 2021 NJCAA Region 19 Championship Baseball Tournament. He also had 18 players receive NJCAA All-Academic honors.
“We hold our student-athletes accountable on and off the field,” Madden said. “We allow our players to be themselves as long as it aligns with the positive culture of the program. We continue to remind the players to enjoy the process and the opportunity that they have to play college baseball. The game and the experience is supposed to be fun, but at the end of the day, winning is fun. So, everything we do is geared toward winning on and off the field to help develop the young men that come into our program into adults who are positive contributors to society, and someday good husbands and fathers.”
Wilkins has been head softball coach since 2016 and has an overall record of 151-64-1 as of April 24. Eric Swanson has served as his assistant coach during that entire time. Stephany Courtney joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach in 2022.
“Reaching 150 wins is great,” Wilkins said. “But I have to thank all the past and present players we have had during that time. If it wasn't for them, we would have never gotten here.”
During his time as head coach, Wilkins has been NJCAA Region 19 Coach of the Year twice (2021 and ‘22), and had one NJCAA All-American, two NJCAA Region 19 Players of the Year, one NJCAA Region 19 Pitcher of the Year, 31 NJCAA Region 19 All-Region players, two NJCAA Region 19 Championships, and two NJCAA District Championships. Since 2018, he has also had 20 players receive NJCAA All-Academic honors.
“My approach has always been to try and bring in the best student-athletes available,” Wilkins said. “I credit the success of the program to the people I have around me. That's my coaches and players. Without good players coming in, it would be tough to compete and be successful.”
