The Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association held its awards ceremony for statewide fire prevention contest winners Jan. 8 at the Cheswold Fire Hall.
Local students honored at the state level include Liliana Hazzard, first place, first grade, East Millsboro Elementary, Millsboro Fire Company; Hunter Greenstreet, special poster first place, John M. Clayton Elementary, Dagsboro and Frankford volunteer fire departments; Edward Alexander Pace, special essay third place, Mariner Middle, Milton Fire Department; and Quinn Feist, second place, fifth grade, Lewes Elementary.
Believed to be the oldest children’s fire safety program in America, the DVFA fire prevention poster and essay contest program is promoted throughout the state during the month of October.
Children in kindergarten through third grade prepared posters on an assigned fire prevention topic. Students in fourth through eighth grades composed essays on their assigned topic.
